In Phang Nga Bay the limestone karsts rise straight out of shallow, almost motionless water. For filming that is the rare combination of a backdrop nobody can rebuild and a sea flat enough that a yacht sits as if it were in a marina. Interiors run without rolling, the drone holds steady, and an anchorage lasts the whole afternoon.
The difference is the hour. From half past nine the longtails and the day trippers arrive, and after that every frame has a second boat in it. So I leave in the dark and have the well known hongs to myself for a good hour. The tide decides on top of that which channels are open at all, which is something to look up beforehand rather than discover on site.
