Casa de Campo and Cap Cana are two of the largest marinas in the Caribbean, built for sportfishers and big motor yachts. The berths are wide and the entrances deep, so a yacht can be shot where it lies without being moved. For an owner that is the practical difference from an anchorage.
Between January and March the humpbacks come into Samaná Bay, and that is when material gets made here that has nothing to do with a marina. For the rest of the year the south-east coast carries it: shallow water, a steady trade wind and light that is almost always there.
