Newport holds the boats between the Caribbean season and the Mediterranean one, and in July and August the harbour is as concentrated as anywhere in the world. The classic regattas here put wooden hulls and gaff rigs on the same water as modern racing boats, which is a combination you cannot stage anywhere else.
Narragansett Bay is wide and reliable and the light in September is the best of the year. The town itself, shingle houses and church spires, gives the shoreline behind a boat a character that a marina breakwater never will.
