The Solent carries more sailing traffic than anywhere else in the UK, and the industry along the Hamble is the reason: brokers, riggers, sailmakers and yards within a few miles of each other. Most of the British brokerage market is photographed in this one stretch of water.
The weather is the job. Grey is normal and a bright day is the exception, so the material has to work in flat light rather than wait for sun. Shot that way, with the right exposure and a proper grade, a Solent boat looks better than a badly timed Mediterranean one.
