In the Tobago Cays the boats lie behind a horseshoe reef that holds the Atlantic outside. The water in front is shallow and turquoise, the open swell stands behind it, and from the air that line is exactly what you see. There is no second anchorage in the Caribbean as unmistakable as this one.
Bequia is the base for it, half an hour away, with Admiralty Bay as sheltered water for interiors. Canouan and Union Island lie to the south, Mustique to the north. The distances are short, but the north-east trade blows straight through the gaps between the islands, and every passage shows it.
