The Barcolana in October puts more than a thousand boats on one start line in the Gulf of Trieste. For anyone who sells sails, hardware or charter weeks in the Adriatic, that single Sunday is the densest gathering of customers and boats in the year.
The rest of the season is quieter and more industrial: yards at Monfalcone, the bora that can shut a shoot down for two days, and a coastline of limestone rather than sand. Plan for the wind, and the same coast that cancels one day gives an exceptionally clear one after it.
