FILM 013 CHARTER

VIDEO MARKETING FOR CHARTER COMPANIES.

How charter operators raise their booking rate with professional video, and why the production has to happen in autumn.

Charter is emotion on demand. A customer does not book a boat, they book an experience, an idea, a promise. And that is where the problem sits: most charter companies sell that promise with tables, technical data and three photographs taken under cloud. It is the equivalent of a restaurant publishing only its ingredient lists. The appetite is missing.

Video is the medium that creates the appetite. No other format carries the feeling of a day on the water so directly. The wind, the light, the sound of the water, the openness of the horizon. All of that can be filmed. And all of it can be used to turn somebody browsing into somebody booking.

Why charter operators need video

Booking a charter is an emotional process. The customer is sitting at home, perhaps on a grey November evening, scrolling through options. They compare prices, equipment, cruising grounds. Everything looks similar. Everything reads similar. And then they hit a video.

A video showing a family sitting on the bow in the evening sun. The skipper taking the boat through a quiet bay. The children jumping off the bathing platform into clear water. Something shifts in that moment. The customer stops comparing. They want that specific experience.

That is the power of video in this business. It breaks the comparability. It turns a booking option into a longing, and longing is the strongest driver of a booking decision there is.

I have watched it at several charter companies: once professional video goes onto the website and the booking pages, time on page rises clearly. And with time on page, the probability of a booking.

Which videos a charter company needs

Not every video is equally effective. For charter I recommend a clear hierarchy.

„A charter company does not sell boats. It sells memories that have not been made yet, and video is the only medium that can show those in advance." // JKK Jerome

Connecting video to the booking

The best video is useless if it is not part of the booking process. I regularly see operators commission excellent films and then upload them to YouTube, where they pick up five hundred views and produce not a single booking.

Video has to be where the decision gets made. On the booking page, next to the price calculator. In the newsletter promoting early-booking rates. In the remarketing advert that reminds a customer of their search. In the automated enquiry flow that sends a personalised offer after first contact.

Getting video into the booking funnel is what separates a nice film from a working marketing instrument.

Social media as a booking channel

For charter, social media is not a sideshow. It is a direct booking channel. Instagram, Facebook and increasingly TikTok are where prospective guests find their holiday inspiration in the first place.

Short video works particularly well here. A fifteen-second clip of a bay in the morning sun, captioned with something like „your next summer" and a link to the booking page. Simple, emotional, direct. Clips like that can be produced in series and played out across the whole pre-season.

What a lot of operators miss: the pre-season is the decisive window. For many customers the decision about a summer charter is made between January and March. That is exactly when the videos have to be running, which means the production has to be finished before then.

So I recommend planning the shoot for late summer or autumn. The boats are still in the water, the light is golden, and the material is ready in good time for the pre-season.

Three steps to start with

Check your booking page. Is there a video on it? If not, that is the most urgent gap you have. A professional experience film on the booking page can lift conversion noticeably.

Define your message. What makes your charter particular? The cruising ground? The service? The boats? The answer sets the focus of everything you shoot.

Plan ahead. Good charter video does not get made at a desk. It needs real water, real light and real people on the boat. Plan the production for a time when all three are available.
