Cristoforo Colombo sits almost on the water at the western end of the harbour, and its control zone covers much of the basin where the boats lie. Flying in Genoa is therefore not improvised: where you stand and how far you go are decided beforehand and cleared.
The commercial port runs traffic all day, so work on the yachts happens early or moves east. From Santa Margherita onwards the restrictions ease and the coast turns vertical, and from above it becomes obvious why this stretch films better than almost anything else in the Mediterranean.
