The airfield sits above Holtenau, and directly beneath it the Kiel Canal begins, with commercial traffic around the clock. A drone flight in that area is filed, not attempted. Further south, off Düsternbrook and Schilksee, there is considerably more room.
From the air the fjord is a rewarding subject, because both shores fit into one frame and the water lies calm in a westerly. During Kiel Week the airspace is managed for the racing, and then the same rule applies as everywhere: anyone wanting to fly sorts it out weeks ahead.
