The chalk coast and the Bodden landscape are protected, and that is not a formality: during the breeding season there are distances to keep, and over parts of the area there is no flying at all. Ignoring that produces letters rather than pictures. Flights agreed in advance, on the other hand, are straightforward.
Outside the protected zones Rügen is one of the most rewarding areas in Germany from the air, because shallow water over pale sand gives colours you otherwise have to go much further north to find. The best time is mid morning, before day traffic starts moving on the Bodden.
