Dutch water is flat, and that changes what a picture can do. Without swell you lose the drama of a boat burying her bow, and you gain something else: clean reflections, a horizon you can compose against, and the traditional flat bottomed rigs that exist almost nowhere else. Shot right, that reads as heritage rather than as calm.
The country also builds boats, which means a lot of my work here is for yards rather than owners. A new hull leaving the shed, the first sail, the handover to the customer. I work across the IJsselmeer, Zeeland and Friesland, and the short distances mean two locations in one day are realistic.
