Four days that decide a whole season

The Monaco Yacht Show is the only week in the year when a hundred large yachts and most of the people who buy and charter them are in the same harbour at the same time. For a broker it is the densest four days of the calendar, and for photography it is the hardest, because every quay is crowded, the light is flat at midday and nobody has an empty deck.

So the work splits in two. The show itself is reportage, shot early in the morning before the gates open and in the last hour of light when the crowd thins, plus the meetings and the deck parties that are the real reason your clients are there. The yacht herself is photographed the week before, while she is still at Cap d’Ail or in Antibes and her deck is her own. Trying to do both during the show gets you neither.

How the week runs

Step 01

The brief

What the images are for: a sale, a charter season or the yard. That decides everything else.

Step 02

Aboard

Half a day to a day, in the order the crew can live with. I bring almost nothing with me.

Step 03

Delivery

Edited, cropped for every portal, position data stripped out of every file.
