Cannes sits next to Mandelieu airport, and the Nice control zone sits above it. Taking off on impulse here means flying illegally at best and into an approach path at worst. Every flight is filed in advance, with zone, altitude and time window. That is the dull part of the job, and it is the part most aerial footage dies on.
In practice: over the bay and out by the Lérins islands a lot is possible, over the Croisette and during the festival almost nothing. For yachts I therefore plan the aerials seaward, with the town behind the boat rather than beneath the drone. It looks better and it costs no conversation with the gendarmerie.
